INTRO TO The Gospel of Mark
It was killing time in Rome. The church was experiencing the Neronian holocaust, in which many believers had been burned alive at Nero’s garden parties and two of the church’s more important leaders (Peter and Paul) had been executed. So after their execution there appeared among the believers a small book written to remind them of the nature of Jesus’ own messiahship as God’s suffering servant and to encourage the believers to bear their cross. (How to Read the Bible by Gordon D. Fee and Douglas Stuart, page 278)
Mark’s gospel gives meaning to suffering… that even though we suffer now for our faith, in the Christian life tomorrow is always a new beginning. In the midst of our perseverance the gospel restores the living hope we have in Christ to it’s rightful place in our lives. Our lives in Jesus Christ promises eternal life.
KEY VERSE
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served,
but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
-Mark 10:45

The question remains, "What does it really say?" Here is a book that explains the greatest of Bible themes clearly and logically. Rather than focusing on one part-and missing the whole-the author chronologically binds together the entire text into one great universal drama, looking at events from the perspective of those who experienced history in the making.
"Even though I had attended church for over 30 years, the Bible never made sense to me. It was just a bunch of disjointed stories. Now the Bible all fits together in a clear, logical manner."

The Moody Handbook of Theology leads the beginner into the appreciation and understanding of this essential field of study. It introduces the reader to the five dimensions that provide a comprehensive view of theology: biblical, systematic, historical, dogmatic and contemporary.
The apostle Paul wrote that all Scripture is 'profitable for teaching' (2 Tim. 3:16), that Timothy should 'pay close attention to...your teaching' (1 Tim. 4:16), and that leaders should 'be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict' (Titus 1:9). When he wrote these statements, Paul was referring to theology.
Beyond giving basic definitions and general descriptions, author Paul Enns summarizes the substantial features of theology. In this way, he provides a concise doctrinal reference tool for the newcomer as well as the seasoned scholar seeking a refresher.
